Sri Lankan government focuses on developing tourism in Sigiriya World Heritage Site

The Sri Lankan government focusing its attention on the development of tourism in Sigiriya is considering to install elevators and electric cars for the convenience of the tourists to the World Heritage Site.

Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the government will set up elevators in the near future for the benefit of the tourists climbing the Sigiriya rock and these development activities would be carried out safeguarding its historical and archaeological value.

Speaking to the media in Sigiriya, Minister Kariyawasam said the government has discussed the measures to improve tourism to the site with various parties and have decided to introduce the concept of electric cars for easy transportation.

He pointed out that it takes a long time to reach the top and not everyone is able to climb the rock.

The Minister noting that the paintings at the World Heritage Site historic Dambulla cave temple are deteriorating since they are not properly preserved, instructed the officials of Archeology Department to take immediate conservation measures to protect the paintings.

Accordingly, measures have been taken to implement the conservation activities as a joint project of the Department of Archaeology and the Central Cultural Fund.

The Minister also said the attention has been focused on introducing an online facility for the tourists to buy tickets to the Sigiriya World Heritage Site in order to ease the inconvenience caused to the tourists when purchasing tickets and expand the tourism activities
