Sri Lanka to construct luxury tourist camps adjacent to Yala National Park

The Sri Lankan government with the aim to attract high-income tourists plans to construct luxury environmentally-friendly tourist camps adjacent to the Yala National Park in the deep South.

Earlier the government had allocated a land of seven acres belonging to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority in Palatupana area to the Wild Coast Lodge (PVT) Ltd in 2012 to construct the tourist camps.

Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs Minister John Amaratunga has proposed to provide an additional 155 perches of land on a 50 year lease basis to the Wild Coast Lodge (PVT) Ltd to continue the project to construct the camps adjacent to the National Park.

The Cabinet of Ministers at their weekly meeting on Tuesday has approved the Minister Amaratunga’s proposal.

The Cabinet has also given approval for the Minister to obtain the approval of the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resources Management and the recommendations of Department of Wildlife Conservation in continuing with construction works.
