Sri Lanka approves new rules for tourist businesses

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved new rules for tourist businesses as part of measures for more government regulation in the booming industry with more rules being drafted for small enterprises, a spokesman said.

The new regulations were presented by Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunge.

They cover minimum space, capacities and facilities for tourist hotels classified from 1 to 5 star, licence fees and registration.

Under the rules, every proprietor must comply with the minimum requirements for capacities and facilities, and comply with a code of conduct.

They must also get a license from the director general of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority to be able to operate.

The Ministry of Tourism Development is also drafting guidelines for tourist guest houses, independent tourist restaurants, tourist shops, ayurvedic tourist hotels, resorts and health care centres, and spas, wellness centres and apartment hotels.
