Aug 09, Colombo: The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to obtain fingerprints as biometric data of applicants when issuing Passports and will begin the process to issue biometric passports according to international standards with effect from 10th August 2015.
Immigration and Emigration Controller, General Nihal Ranasinghe said that the new system has a high accuracy rate with the introduction of finger prints to authenticate identity.
As the fingerprints have to be captured, all applicants have to come in person to the Head Office of the Department or regional Offices to submit their passport applications.
The Department will not accept printed photographs of the applicants. Arrangements have also been made to obtain photographs of the applicants, conforming to standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
