The 65th annual Bellanwila Esala Perahera will commence with Kap planting ceremony on August 05 and will be held up to August 16 parading the streets in and around the vicinity of the Bellanwila temple, the Most Ven Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera said at a special press conference held today at the Government Information Dept. Auditorium.
The perahera will begin from the premises of the Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara. The Devadutha Perahera and Kumbal Perahera will commence on August 08. The Flower Perahera will parade the streets from August 09 to 12 while the Pavada Perahera will be held on August 13. The Ransivili and the Randoli Peraheras will follow on August 14 and 15 respectively. The pageant will end with the water cutting ceremony and alms giving for gods at the Boralesgamuwa, Aththidiya- ferry on August 16.
The Most Ven.Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera said that action has been taken to shorten the Perahera route due to the forthcoming General Election onAugust 17. Accordingly the route of the procession will be along the Dehiwala-Maharagama main road, Bellanwila Sri Somarathana Mawatha and Vihara Mawatha.
The Bellanwila Esala Festival commenced on July 30 and Sathi Pirith chanting activities were initiated on August 02.
The Bellanwila Esala Maha Perahera was initiated in August 1950 by the Chief Incumbent of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya late Venerable Professor Bellanwila Sri Somarathana Nayaka Thero.
